Located on the beach and surrounded by the mountains of beautiful Uyak Bay, the bunk house was built in 1966 and remodeled with new updates in 2008. It includes 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a fully furnished modern kitchen, and a large great room.

From the deck you’ll see eagles, whales, otters, seals, fox, and kingfishers. And when you’re ready to play, there’s fishing from the beach, basketball, badminton, and buoy swings in the warehouse.

Directly behind the cannery a mountain rises 3,200 feet—filled with dens of the famous Kodiak brown bear. You’ll be amazed by the sight of these giants and their cubs walking along the mountain trails.

Coming soon: Our unique, indoor wildlife viewing facility lets you observe nature from indoor comfort. Perched high on top of the cannery warehouse, you’ll have a great view of bears, deer, and mountain goats on the mountain, eagles soaring overhead, and whales and sea life in the bay…all in complete safety and comfort.

Meals: We put our emphasis into making sure your adventure is all you dreamed it would be and leave the cooking to you. A fully furnished kitchen is provided so you can prepare your own meals. Amenities include:

Propane refrigerator / freezer & range

Outdoor propane BBQ grill

Cooking utensils

Pots & pans

Silverware & Dinnerware

It’s easy to call ahead and have groceries delivered. See the “rates and important info” page for details.

An amazing variety and number of land and marine mammals as well as birds make Uyak Bay their home. Common sights include bears foraging for food, eagles and puffins soaring above, inquisitive seals lounging on the rocks, foxes digging for clams, and whales cruising along the bay.

We practice a low-impact philosophy that views all wildlife in its natural environment and we provide three ways to observe:

Shelbee – D: Our 22′ landing craft

Sea kayak

Hiking by land

Bear viewing: Our camp is surrounded by the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge that is home to over 3,000 Kodiak brown bears—one of the highest population of bears in the world.

Bird watching: Kodiak Island is home to over 200 species of birds—A bird watcher’s paradise featuring upland birds, sea birds, waterfowl, and birds of prey. Commonly seen species include bald eagles, horned & tufted puffins, kittiwakes, arctic terns, oystercatchers, cormorants, harlequin ducks, mergansers, sand pipers and more. A complete birding list is available from the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

Whale watching: Three species of whales frequent Uyak Bay in search of food. Fin whales, which reach lengths of 70,’ are commonly seen from the Shelbee-D and often from “the bluff,” a short walk from our Amook cabin where there is an expansive view of the bay. Humpback whale visits peak during migration times. They willingly show their flukes and will amaze you when they breach. Orcas cruise the bay searching for salmon and other marine mammals. They also breach and their playful calves love to show off.

Whether you want to land the “barn door halibut,” battle the fighting Coho or the mighty King, we offer a fishing adventure that will become your favorite fish story for life. Numerous species are found in the immediate area including:

King

Silver

Pink & chum salmon

Halibut

Sea bass

Yellow eye

In fact, catching 9-12 different species of fish in a single outing is common.

And unlike other spots where you fish in the middle of a crowd, our remote location assures you of privacy in a bay with salmon, halibut and rockfish. On board our landing craft, the Shelbee-D, you’ll see a variety of marine life on the ride to the best fishing spots. We provide all the gear and bait you need.

You can fish several ways:

Saltwater trolling for salmon & halibut

Casting from beaches for dolly vardon & salmon

Jigging for salmon, halibut & rockfish

Fresh water creek/river fly and spin fishing

State of Alaska fishing license, king stamp, rules & regulations:

You can purchase your fishing or hunting licenses online at www.admin.adfg.state.ak.us/license

You’ll need to allow time for processing and mailing prior to departing. You can also purchase your licenses while in the town of Kodiak from the sporting good stores.

Processing and freezing your fish:

We all dive in and get our hands dirty while processing fish, it’s much faster and more fun. We have plenty of freezer space for your catch. We now have a commercial vacuum sealer plus bags.

Bags are $.75 – $1.00 ea.

Plan to book early for prime salmon , halibut & creek fishing as these times fill quickly.

Kayaking is one of the most peaceful and unobtrusive ways to explore our beautiful coastal areas. You’ll commonly see bears, seals, otters, eagles, whales, puffins and more while paddling along the Uyak Bay. The sparkling, clear water lets you view the beauty beneath you too. You’ll see starfish, urchins, anemones, sea cucumbers, and crab.

We’re equipped with 3 single and 2 double kayaks. We transport you to prime wildlife viewing areas aboard the Shelbee-D. Then we set you loose with a certified kayak instructor and guide to ensure your safety. Many guests tell us this is the highlight of their stay.

CAMP FIRE COOKING is a cooking show produced and directed by Spirit of Alaska. This is a 15-30 minute cooking show that you can be a part of. Most cooking shows are all about some self-indulgent chef. This cooking show is about you… Yes, you!! This is your CLAIM TO FAME, a chance to show off your favorite dish and be in the public eye. Here is how it works….

If you wish to participate:

You will be interviewed by SOA (Spirit of Alaska) then you will explain your favorite dish. Simple is good.

Your interview:
Who are you?
Where are you from?
Who is your favorite cook/chef? Who inspires you?
Where did you learn this dish?
What brings you to SOA?
Anything else you would like to add

You will cook a dish:
On a camp fire, a Coleman stove or on a BBQ grill. Hence the name, CAMP FIRE COOKING!

We will video you harvesting or catching ingredients in the wild (some suggestions….fish, crab, berries, vegetation), preparing the ingredients, cooking and finally eating the meal. This is all in good fun and making light of the many reality cooking shows that are on TV today.

If you need a special ingredient that is not available out at SOA, feel free to document or video your trip into the super market and what it takes to transport your food so we can add this clip to the show.

CAMPFIRE COOKING will be a YouTube video. We hope you will join us for the making of an episode.

Bon Appétit
